Modbury Uniting Church has as one of its objectives a strong sense of Social Justice and aims to achieve this by focusing on the plight of refugees in the Sudan.
Over the few years the church has welcomed many families into our church and helped them settle in Modbury and has pledged to help others as funds allow.
We support our families in many practical ways including help in finding accommodation, clothing, furniture, suitable jobs and schooling for children.
A number of our sponsored families have now moved to other areas and are in the process of purchasing their own homes. Modbury Uniting Church will continue to support these “new” families who now call Australia home.
As an ongoing involvement with the people of Sudan in particular, we are focusing on assisting the people in Southern Sudan to re-establish schools by funding school uniforms, providing computer assistance and other equipment when needed. Funds are also being raised to help other schools in Sudan with books and writing implements.
- Dinka Language School
Modbury Uniting hosts a Dinka language school each Saturday morning to encourage Sudanese children to keep their native language as well as English, and to help native English speakers to have a basic understanding of one of the languages spoken by refugees coming to our area.
