International Women’s Day Wins Another Award!

The Modbury Uniting Church International Women’s Group at Modbury which began in 2004, has been awarded The Andamooka Community Project Award which recognises volunteers who have undertaken a community project that has resulted in significant community benefit.
The award is named after the inaugural winner of the award, the inspiring Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association, which made an extraordinary impact helping to deliver the 29 kilometre water pipeline to Andamooka.
The Modbury Uniting Church International Women’s Group supports women and their families from African countries and helps them settle into a very different cultural background from the one they are accustomed to. The project is managed solely by volunteers. More than 100 women, together with their children, participate each year.
In the past seven years the project has provided a safe, non-threatening environment for refugees and people from different backgrounds so they can learn and practice new skills aimed at assisting them to settle and feel welcome in their new country.
Participants in the program gain the confidence they need to be an integral part of their new country and quickly become active within the community.
In its operation, the International Women’s Group has engaged a large body of volunteers, partnering with many agencies including Families SA, Lutheran Community Care, Centrelink, Migrant Resource Centre, Legal Services, SA Police, Relationships Australia and the Tea Tree Gully Council. Working together they deliver critically important community benefits to support new arrivals and migrant.
